From 1953 he studied at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Appliqués, from 1956 at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and from 1959 also at the department of engraving and sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux -Arts) in Brussels. Since 1961, Alain spent two years in the workshop of the sculptor Volti, who became his mentor in art and in life. In 1973, he made his first trip to Japan, which introduced him to the sumi-e technique, which deeply influenced his work. Alain undertook repeated trips to the East for further in-depth study of it and is now a master of this technique. The work of Alain Bonnefoit is an ode to femininity, which the artist portrays beautifully on canvas.
Hervé Bazin described him as "the painter of Venus." Alain Bonnefoit has exhibited in France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, USA, Tahiti, South Korea, Japan.
